<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>A Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is the land designated under Directive 92/43/EEC on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are protected areas in the UK designated under:</SPAN></P><UL><LI><P><SPAN>The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 (as amended) in England and Wales (including the adjacent territorial sea) and to a limited extent in Scotland (reserved matters) and Northern Ireland (excepted matters),</SPAN></P></LI><LI><P><SPAN>The Conservation (Natural Habitats &c.) Regulations 1994 (as amended) in Scotland,</SPAN></P></LI><LI><P><SPAN>The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1995 (as amended) in Northern Ireland, and</SPAN></P></LI><LI><P><SPAN>The Conservation of Offshore Marine Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 in the UK offshore area.</SPAN></P></LI></UL><P><SPAN>Under these Regulations, the UK Government and devolved administrations are required to establish a network of important high-quality conservation sites that will make a significant contribution to conserving the habitats and species identified in Annexes I and II, respectively, of European Council Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora, known as the Habitats Directive. The listed habitat types and species are those considered to be most in need of conservation at a European level (excluding birds). Of the Annex I habitat types, 78 are believed to occur in the UK. Of the Annex II species, 43 are native to, and normally resident in, the UK.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>SACs, together with Special Protection Areas (SPAs), form part of the UK's national site network.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are strictly protected sites designated the EC Habitats Directive. Article 3 of the Habitats Directive requires the establishment of a European network of important high-quality conservation sites that will make a significant contribution to conserving the 169 habitat types and 623 species identified in Annexes I and II of the Directive. The listed habitat types and species are those considered to be most in need of conservation at a European level (excluding birds). A selection of these habitats and species are given priority status in the Directive because they are considered to be particularly vulnerable and are mainly, or exclusively, found within the European Union. Of the Annex I habitat types, 76 are believed to occur in the UK, of which 22 are priority habitat types. Of the Annex II species, 41 are native to, and normally resident in, the UK, of which one is a priority species. The JNCC (Joint Nature Conservation Committee) is the forum through which the three country conservation agencies - the Countryside Council for Wales, English Nature and Scottish Natural Heritage - deliver their statutory responsibilities for Great Britain as a whole, and internationally.
